Curriculum Vitae

Interests and Research:

Dr. Soulé’s main area of research deals with aspects of climate and vegetation change. He has several on-going projects in the fields of dendroclimatology, dendroecology, and climatology. In summer 2015 he began a new project funded by ASU’s University Research Council examining linkages between Arctic sea-ice extent, summer temperatures, and radial growth rates of the high elevation western tree species alpine larch. (Link to project page) Another ongoing project deals with a tree-ring reconstruction of rainfall from tropical cyclones on the North Carolina coastal plain from live and remnant wood from longleaf pine trees. (Link to project page) Pete also is conducting a study investigating potential differences in radial growth rates and water-use efficiency of ponderosa pine trees along elevational gradients in the northern Rocky Mountains. In support of his tree-ring research, Pete operates the Department of Geography and Planning’s Appalachian Tree Ring Lab. Pete is currently sharing the lab with Dr. Saskia van de Gevel and graduate and undergraduate students pursuing tree-ring research.

Pete teaches Global Climate Change, Introduction to Physical Geography, Weather and Climate, and graduate courses in Natural Hazards and Tree Ring Research.
