Library of Congress Map Collections
The Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress holds more than 4.5 million items, of which Map Collections represents only a small fraction (i.e. those that have been converted to digital form).
The American Geographical Society Library (AGSL) of the UWM Libraries has been able to institute two projects with the scope of re-housing, scanning, creating metadata for, and preserving on a long-term basis, approximately 68,000 nitrate negatives, 35,000 safety negatives, and 25,000 feet of motion picture film in its historic photography collection.
The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library at the University of Georgia maintains a collection of more than 800 historic maps spanning nearly 500 years, from the sixteenth century through the early century. The collection provides a graphic resource upon which scholars can draw in re-discovering the minds and movements of early American explorers, revolutionary statesmen, cultural figures and politicians represented by the library's book and manuscript collections.
