Interests and Research

Dr. Soulé’s main area of research deals with aspects of climate and vegetation change. He has several on-going projects in the fields of dendroclimatology, dendroecology, and climatology. He is beginning year three of a project funded by the National Science Foundation with a primary focus of developing a multi-century, tree-ring-based climate reconstruction of precipitation delivered by tropical cyclones using live and remnant wood samples from longleaf pine trees growing in the coastal plain region of North and South Carolina (link to project page). In a study internally funded by the University Research Council, Pete is examining the long-term impacts of increasing aridity and increasing levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide on radial growth rates of western juniper trees in the high desert region of Oregon (link to project page). In a recently completed project, Pete examined various linkages between Arctic sea-ice extent, summer temperatures, and radial growth rates of the high elevation western tree species alpine larch (link to project page). His two most recent graduate students completed tree-ring-based research projects reconstructing the flow of the jet stream over western North America (Evan Montpellier, 2018) and examining growth and growth/climate response differences between trees that the endangered red cockaded woodpecker select for their nesting cavities and adjacent trees that they do not select (April Kaiser, 2019). In support of tree-ring research at ASU, Pete operates the Department of Geography and Planning’s Appalachian Tree Ring Lab with Dr. Saskia van de Gevel. The lab is available for any student that would like to conduct a research project that uses tree-ring data.

Pete has been a resident of the high country since 1993 and umpires youth baseball, snowboards, hikes, and plays disc golf for his leisure activities.

Pete teaches Global Climate Change, Introduction to Physical Geography (traditional lecture and online versions), Weather and Climate (traditional lecture and online versions), and graduate courses in Natural Hazards and Tree Ring Research.
